From pints of papaya-ginger-pineapple sorbet to sundae kits with special toppings, here’s where to buy frozen desserts from Detroit restaurants for takeout and delivery

By now, those of us sheltering in place and ordering in are probably familiar with the meal kit trend that’s flourished on restaurant menus throughout the pandemic. These kits make for easy family meal prep or allow customers to try their hand at one of their favorite restaurant dishes at home. But, alongside the very practical dinner options, a handful of frozen dessert kits have begun popping up at local establishments.

One might ask, “Do I really need an ice cream sundae kit?” and the answer to that is probably not. Dessert is a plus on top of a meal. And, sure, you could probably assemble a kit with store bought ingredients or visit a favorite local ice cream stand. But, if you want to take some of the effort out of hunting down toppings or purchase a full pint of your favorite local restaurant gelato, now is the time. Consider trying out one of these restaurant-made pints and sundae packages to add a bit of sparkle (or sprinkles) to dessert or as a treat for a birthday celebration.

Marrow

This kit has all the bells and whistles included in one tidy package. For between $20 and $45, customers get a pint of fresh vanilla ice cream with toppings like chocolate sauce, peanut butter sauce, miso caramel, peanuts, cookie crumbles, brown sugar whipped cream, and Luxardo cherries. Order the package online for curbside pickup.

SheWolf

Finish off an Italian meal prepped by this Cass Corridor restaurant with a pint of SheWolf’s soft serve ice cream. It comes in flavors like pistachio, lemon-ricotta, and chocolate. Purchase take-and-bake cookie dough on the side and make fresh ice cream sandwiches at home. The restaurant also sells a selection of packaged Italian cookies to dress up your sundae on the pantry menu. Place orders by email at mercato@shewolfdetroit.com for curbside pickup.

Takoi

Fans of this Thai-influenced restaurant’s vegan coconut milk ice cream can purchase full pints for $8 from the curbside market shop. Order online and maybe pick up a tray of brownies, too, for the brownie sundae or pair it with home brewed Astro Coffee for an affogato.

Mabel Gray

Pastry chef Kristina Conger is serving a variety of treats curbside at Mabel Gray including pints of sorbet for $8 each in flavors like papaya-ginger-pineapple, chocolate, and Michigan peach-bourbon. Pair it with a slice of pie, a brownie, or a fresh baked cookie. The restaurant is accepting orders by email at mabelcarryout@gmail.com and confirms by phone, so make sure to include your name, number, and desired pickup time in the message.

Treat Dreams Dessert Emporium

This dessert bar is offering customizable ice cream sundae kits for pickup and delivery for $27. Choose two pints of ice cream in flavors like vegan dark chocolate peanut butter or Kookie Monster cookie dough ice cream. The kit serves four people and includes M&M’s, crushed Oreo’s, peanuts, sprinkles, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and cherries. Place orders online.
