Where to buy cookies, cakes, ice cream, and sundae kits for birthdays parties and celebrations

Social distancing has toned down big parties around the world. Birthdays, holidays, graduations, and other special events are now practiced in the seclusion of our homes, often without friends and family, to slow the spread of COVID-19. It’s been an effective strategy: The rates of new cases in Michigan are starting to decline as are the number of new deaths. In hard times, it’s all the more important to find cause to celebrate a new day — maybe with something sweet.

From bakeries making custom cakes to restaurants churning up pints of fresh ice cream and sorbet, the Detroit region currently has a lot to offer in the way of goodies for takeout and delivery. Below, Eater has assembled a collection of guides to favorite destinations for cookies, cupcakes, pie, popsicles, and ice cream sundae kits to make at home events a little more special.

Cakes, Cookies, and Pastries

Maybe you’re over baking at home right now or avoiding turning the oven on during to the heat. Maybe you’re just in need of the perfect birthday cake for your kid. Whatever the situation, metro Detroit-area bakeries are here for all your cookie, cake, pie, and bread needs.

Frozen Desserts

Hot and humid days call for nice, chilly treats and Detroit area ice cream shops and custard stands are rapidly reopening for a summer season of social distancing. Some restaurants are getting creative with kits for the perfect ice cream sundae. There’s also plenty of hard scoop ice cream and popsicles and soft serve destinations that are open for carryout, curbside pickup, and even delivery right now. Grab an ice cream sandwich or a cone of Dole whip and stroll in the sun.

Vegan and Gluten-Free Options

It’s hard enough finding some of our favorite foods in the pandemic but customers with dietary restrictions have a particularly difficult time. With that in mind, Eater has assembled guides to vegan and vegetarian restaurants that are open for carryout and delivery as well as details on where to purchase vegan and gluten-free desserts. Many of the other guides also feature a selection of vegan and gluten-free options.
