Budding artists, bakers and cooks take heed: there’s a way to learn without a class. Local art studios and restaurants have created at-home DIY kits for pickup to let kids be kids and learn about the masters. Sculpting, crafting, baking and painting are all possibilities this summer, thanks to these activity boxes by small businesses in our area.
The Bees Knees Pottery

Order your figurine, clay, mosaic or canvas in advance and declare a pickup time. You will receive a kit with instructions and multiple colors to create your project at home. If the pottery needs to be fired, wrap it after it’s dried and return it to the studio for pickup in a week.

The pop up bakery that appears weekends in Rochester, Plymouth and Ferndale sells a DIY Cupcake Decorating Kit available for preorder. Each kit includes two vanilla cupcakes, two piping bags with buttercream frosting and sprinkles.

Pick from a fairy garden door, mini palette sign, clay hand building or pour painting kit with all of the necessary items included and a link to a video emailed. There is also a kit with an online class to paint like the masters (Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky or Georges Seurat).
