There’s something special when a dad teaches his kids to thread their first worm on the end of a hook and drop a line. It’s even better when something “bites.”
Luckily, we live in a place rich with fishing holes, some so simple you’re left roughing it with the fam and some more grand with playgrounds, modern bathrooms and even picnic spots with grills. Here are a few in Wayne, Macomb and Oakland and Washtenaw counties we’ve rounded up for you to try and test your luck.
Keep in mind a fishing license is required for anyone 17 and older. Many spots also charge a variety of fees for access as well.
Wayne County
Sumac Pointe on Hines Drive, just west of Haggerty Road, in Livonia, lets you combine fishing and picnicking, along with a nearby fun play area for kids when waiting for a bite takes too long.
Elizabeth Park sits along the Detroit River and features more than 1,300 feet of riverwalk for fishing. Plus the park has picnic areas and spaces to have all sorts of fun together.
William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor located along a portion of the Detroit Riverwalk and Michigan’s first urban state park, offers plenty of shoreline fishing. When fishing is finished, it’s just a short walk to your family’s favorite Detroit attractions and restaurants.
Newburgh Lake in Hines Park in Livonia features fishing from the shore, pier and from a boat for families hoping to catch bass, catfish, pike and walleyes among other fish. It offers modern-ish bathrooms, walking trails, boat rental, grills and a playground.
Belle Isle Park, 99 Pleasure Drive, Detroit, offers fishing from the ramped pier but if you just want to look at pretty fish, it’s got you covered with the Aquarium (when it reopens due to the coronavirus shutdown.)
Belanger Park is a great spot on Jefferson Avenue just east of the Detroit Edison River Rouge Power Plant. It has parking, restrooms and 600 feet of shoreline fishing.
Oakland County
Pontiac Lake, 7800 Gale Road, Waterford, offers two universally accessible fishing piers in a 3,700-acre park. The park features hiking, biking, equestrian trails, camping and even the longest beach in southeast Michigan.
Firefighters’ Park, 1800 West Square Lake Road, Troy, offers grills, picnic tables, modern bathrooms and a playground.
Founder’s Fishing Pier, 35500 W. Eight Mile, Farmington Hills, offers catch and release fishing with the family (including the family pet) from the pier. After fishing, use the grills, picnic tables and walking trails to make a day of it. If you really want to do it right, group classes are sometimes offered.
Bald Mountain Recreation Area, 3330 E. Greenshield Road, Lake Orion, is filled with plenty of places to fish, particularly with people with special needs in mind.
Carter Lake at Thelma Spencer Park offers fishing at the formal gravel pit, with spots available on the shore, handicap accessible pier and by boat. Rental boats are available.
Dickinson Lake, located in Seven Lakes State Park, 14390 Fish Lake Road, Holly, is great for kids with its ADA accessible ramp and pier. The lake also has no wake.
Washtenaw County
Spring Valley Trout Farm. Guarantee a successful day of fishing at this fully stocked fishing spot in spring-fed ponds (you don’t even need a license here) featuring catfish and trout. There’s even a pond just for kids 10 and under, talk about family friendly.
Huron River-Gallup Park/Geddes Pond, 3000 Fuller Road, Ann Arbor, lets you fish from the shore, the pier or a boat at this pond. The park also offers picnic tables, hiking trails and boat rentals.
Barton Pond, just off Huron River Drive and west of Main Street in the Ann Arbor City Park, offers shore fishing.
Macomb County
Stony Creek Metropark, 4300 Main Park Road, Shelby Township, features the huge Stoney Creek Lake offering great fishing. Plus this park offers swimming, hiking, biking, in-line skating, a nature center and playgrounds. Families can fish on a barrier-free fishing pier.
Lake St. Clair Metropark, 31300 Metro Parkway, in Harrison Township, offers shore fishing access on the Black Creek canals and Lake St. Clair. Shore fishing platforms are near the eastern end of the park. This busy park also offers plenty of other family fun, including a sandy beach, trails and mini golf course.
Blossom Heath Park & Pier, 24800 Jefferson Ave., St Clair Shores, allows families to fish from the pier. Beyond fishing, this park also offers bathrooms, a playground and picnic area.
