Best Cider Mills and U-Pick Orchards in Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor

Delight your taste buds with some fresh cinnamon sugar doughnuts and homemade apple cider at southeast Michigan best cider mills and apple orchards this fall.

Bring out the whole family and make a day of it – head to one of your local orchards to pick apples, venture through a corn maze or one of the many other cool attractions offered.

Many locations are open daily; some even year ’round. Browse this list of the best cider mills in Michigan’s southeast region – and head out to your hometown orchard to make sweet fall memories with your family and friends!

Macomb County

Altermatt Farms

Altermatt Farms has a variety of produce, and it is all sold in their farmers market daily. Masks are required inside the market.

Blake Farms

  • Where: 17985 Armada Center Road, Armada
  • Cost: $20 minimum per car for u-pick

Head into the fields to pick your own apples or mask up to select pre-picked apples and other apple products in the market. Social distancing is required on wagon rides, so capacity will be limited. Masks are required inside, but not outdoors or in the fields when social distancing can be maintained.

Hy’s Cider Mill

Hys is a great Michigan spot to spend a day picking apples and drinking fresh cider from the working mill. Open weekends only beginning Sept. 7, check the website for updated picking schedule of your favorite apple and for changes in restrictions.

Stony Creek Orchard and Cider Mill

The orchard and cider mill opens in early September for families looking for fall fare. For those not wanting to take to the fields, the farm stand stocks fruit fresh from the trees.

Verellen Orchards

  • Where: 63260 Van Dyke Road, Washington Township

U-pick is only offered for cherries and strawberries, but Verellens apples are top notch at the stand. Curbside pickup is available and customers who stop at the stands or store are asked to utilize face coverings and social distancing.

Westview Orchard and Adventure Farm

The orchard and farm offers everything from a “Bee-”designed corn maze to apples straight from the trees. Masks are required on wagon rides and online tickets should be purchased to limit lines at check-in.

Oakland County

Ashton Orchards Cider Mill

For top-notch cider and donuts that melt in your mouth, visit Ashton. In addition to face coverings required in the store, the orchard has instituted curbside pickup. 

Cook’s Farm Dairy

  • Where: 2950 E. Seymour Lake Road, Ortonville

Cooks has been serving the metro Detroit area since 1933, and in October families can enjoy hayrides to the pumpkin patch to pick their own pumpkins. Then, stay for a donut or try seasonal ice cream flavors like caramel apple and pumpkin crunch. Pumpkins are also available for sale in their pavilion, where families should wear masks.

Diehl’s Orchard and Cider Mill

  • Where: 1479 Ranch Road, Holly

Diehl’s pre-picks the apples and has created a walk-up window for coronavirus safety precautions. Ciderfest 2020 will be held 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 26-27, and the Ciderfest Run has gone virtual (see website to sign up). The Corn Maze opens Sept. 12. 

Erwin Orchards, Inc.

Enjoy traditional cider and donuts, then head to the family-friendly corn maze, find pumpkins (late September), and pick from any of the eight varieties of apples.

Franklin Cider Mill

Check the mills Facebook page or website to learn what is being picked each week from the 25 varieties of apples. The family says that this season, which starts Sept. 5, will look a little different, with redesigned outdoor sales. Online sales will be offered to avoid waiting in lines and the 1832 working mill will not be opened this year to customers. A smooth jazz player will return on weekends for families that remain in Franklin Village. 

Goodison Cider Mill

Stop by for a gallon of fresh-made cider and apples to take home. Families will be expected to wear masks and maintain social distancing. The mill will continue to accept cash, credit cards and checks.  

Long Family Orchard, Farm & Cider Mill

Pick your own apples and pumpkins, take a relaxing wagon ride and test your nerves in the Night Time Corn Maze. Try some homemade doughnuts and cider. Pick up some honey, apple butter, preserves and breads too.

Rochester Cider Mill

Pick up apples in the store, then take the kiddos out to climb the straw pyramid and see the petting farm. You can also admire a collection of antique farm equipment outside and in, where you can guess what the old tools were used for by matching their number to a description.

Yates Cider Mill

Pick up your apples in the apple tent, then head to the Fudge Shoppe for even more tasty treats. Kids love the petting zoo and Pulp Car that dumps 160 bushels of pressed apple cider pumice. Guests are asked to wear masks when entering the mill and send only one family member into the store.

Washtenaw County

Alber Orchard & Cider Mill

Opening Sept. 8, families can select from more than 100 varieties of apples that are pre-picked from the heirloom orchard. Riding the hay wagon is $3 per person and $5 to enter the family-friendly corn maze. Coleman’s Corn Maze

Dexter Cider Mil

This is Michigans oldest continuously operating cider mill. Dexter Cider Mill offers fresh doughnuts and apple nut bread daily, as well as apples from the barrel. Lesser Farms and Orchards

At this sixth-generation family farm, stock up on cider, eggs, homemade jams and jellies and beeswax candles. Produce is pre-picked and families are encouraged to check the website and Facebook page for updated coronavirus requirements.

The Frosty Apple

Wasem Fruit Farm

Cider and doughnuts are lures in addition to over a dozen varieties of apples. After a late-spring frost, U-pick season has been moved to pre-picked for customers to purchase. You can select your own pumpkin.

Wiard’s Orchards & Country Fair

  • Where: 5565 Merritt Road, Ypsilanti
  • Cost: Apples: $7.95 5-pound bag; Fair: $15 ages 2 and older Wednesdays-Fridays, $20 ages 2 and older weekends, $35 season pass

The fall season of apples, pumpkins and fair will open Sept. 12. Families can enjoy the corn maze with the cost of admission, which also includes the family play areas, wagon rides, mini golf, wagon rides and more. A late frost impacted the apple crop so some varieties may only be available in the store. Pre-purchasing tickets online is highly recommended. Mini golf clubs will be sanitized between uses and on-stage singers will have one-time-use caps on the microphones. Capacity inside the store will be reduced for best social distancing, which could increase wait times. Masks are required in high-traffic areas where social distancing isnt possible, but are not required outdoors in the field when six feet from other customers.

Wayne County

Apple Charlie’s

The 95-acre farm has u-pick home grown apples and in late September the pumpkins will be ready. U-pick season will be smaller because of a late-spring frost, but families can enjoy the petting farm that includes an ostrich and pigmy goat. Pre-packaged plain donuts will be available in the shop with sugar you can add yourself. Masks are required in the buildings, but not in the fields unless social distancing can not be maintained. Homemade pies and cookies are also on the menu in the store.

DeBuck’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch

  • Where: 50240 Martz Road, Belleville
  • Cost: $15 admission, pumpkin costs vary by size ($10 Fridays in October)

With 20 acres of pumpkins in varying colors and shapes, theres plenty to choose from at DeBucks. Admission includes a hayride to the pumpkin patch, plus access to the corn mazes and family fun areas. Social distancing is expected and masks are required.  

Obstbaum Orchards

Opening Sept. 12, this family-run orchard, named the German word for fruit tree, has fresh-picked apples, pressed cider and apple cinnamon doughnuts. Obstbaum offers hayrides and U-pick pumpkins. Parmenter’s Northville Cider Mill
