A Conversation Between Mom and Daughter About Race

I am a Black mother living with my family in Birmingham and wanted to share this recent conversation that I had with my daughter, Sienna, about being Black and the current state of race relations in America.

It went something like this:

๐‡๐ž๐ซ: Mom, we should do something to celebrate being Black.

๐Œ๐ž: OK, what are you thinking?

๐‡๐ž๐ซ: I have an idea, but it’s OK if you think it’s weird, but I think it’s perfect for us.

๐Œ๐ž: I’m excited to hear what you’ve come up with.

๐‡๐ž๐ซ: I think we should each do something that represents our uniqueness.

  • Mom, you should post an image on social media from an event that celebrates diversity in its many beautiful shades.
  • Dad should have a conversation with someone that highlights his love for family, education, travel, and fashion; that dispels the image of Black men most often portrayed in the media.
  • I’m going to willingly have “the race conversation” with anyone in my community, even though it’s not my job to educate. I know understanding reduces fear, which helps eliminate bias and prejudice.

๐Œ๐ž: You’re right, it’s perfect for us! *as I cry tears of pride for such insight from my 12-year-old (not so little) lady.*
