Rivertown Market breaks ground this week
At long last, plans for a forthcoming Meijer on East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit have been finalized. The so-called Rivertown Market project, first announced in 2017, is headed to 1475 East Jefferson Ave. and will be a smaller format than the company’s other stores — more akin to Woodward Corner Market in Royal Oak.
Spanning 42,000 square feet, the market will offer smaller selection of products more limited to produce and groceries, as opposed to a department store-style Meijer. This location would be the third Meijer store within Detroit city limits and the first on the east side of the city near Lafayette Park and the Rivertown Warehouse District. The company also plans to make “significant improvements” to the neighboring Greening of Detroit Park. Dennis Archer, Jr., owner of Ignition Media Group and Central Kitchen + Bar, is a partner in the development.
More details of the project and the City of Detroit’s plans for the greater East Jefferson corridor are expected to be released during a groundbreaking press conference at the market site on Thursday, October 29; however, a release teases the possibility of more housing developments and the expansion of the Q-line streetcar system, which currently only serves a limited section of Woodward Avenue between downtown Detroit and New Center.
