Literacy is such an important skill, but not every child loves to read or even has access to books. #MacombReads aims to change that.
This second annual event was created through a partnership with Macomb County’s Department of Planning and Economic Development, Mark Hackel, all 21 of the county’s school districts and select local entities including the Anton Art Center, United Shore Professional Baseball League and All the World’s A Stage with the sole purpose of inspiring kids to read.
“Literacy impacts so many aspects of a child’s life,” says Dr. Alesia Flye, the assistant superintendent for instruction and chief academic officer for the Macomb Intermediate School District. “If we can give students an environment where they can appreciate that and celebrate that, it adds value to the entire Macomb County community.”
The event, which happens on Nov. 7, 2020, is aimed at younger students and has gone mostly virtual to protect participants from potential exposure to COVID-19.
“Last year, we had over 1,300 students in attendance, so they could interact with Michigan authors and illustrators, and be involved in STEM activities,” Flye says. “This year, most of the interactions with authors and illustrators is virtual.”
These virtual meetings will be posted at 9 a.m. on Nov. 7 and will remain up for families to enjoy at their convenience through the end of the year.
In addition to these virtual meetings, this year’s event also features a drive-thru component where families will be able to pick up a bag of books, get some delicious Michigan cider and doughnuts and see costumed characters at a distance.
#MacombReads is a free event that is open to all kids (even if those not from Macomb County). You don’t need to register for the virtual component, but registration is required for the drive-thru.
“(Macomb Reads) is overall one of my favorite events throughout the year that we host for the community. When we get the chance to see the students’ reactions as they’re enjoying books, that’s something I enjoy seeing,” Flye says. “Anytime we can get books in the hands of children, it’s a win.”
